Monmouth asked for ideas to improve the gateway to the town

Council officers are asking people in Monmouth to submit their ideas on how the space between the old and new Monnow bridges could be improved.

Monmouthshire County Council is looking for design concepts and creative suggestions for the location in Monmouth.  This is part of ‘Gateway Monmouth’ which is a scheme that plans to improve the bottom end of Monmouth, often the first part of the town that visitors see.

Bob Greenland, Cabinet Member for regeneration, said:

“Gateway Monmouth aims to improve the appearance of the southern gateway of Monmouth.  We have great support from the Town Council, District Chamber of Trade and Commerce and the Partnership Forum. We all want the area to be welcoming and sympathetic to the history of the town.

“Our recent proposal for a welcome centre with civic square in this space proved difficult to deliver.  Therefore we are looking at the project again and are inviting ideas from people in the community to inform new or revised concepts.

“We really want to invite the thoughts of those who live or work in the town. People in Monmouth have great pride in the town so we think it’s important we get their views on what they would like to see at this location. We want to hear from anyone – we don’t mind if you’re an architect or a school pupil, we just want your sketches and drawings.

“We hope to exhibit some of the submissions for the public to see in March.”

The deadline for responses is 12th March 2010.

Details of how and where suggestions should be submitted are on the council website. More information about the kinds of issues that people may wish to think about before they start is available at www.monmouthshire.gov.uk/gatewaymonmouth
