Monmouth Library to Provide Afternoon of Health Advice for Younger Generation

MonmouthshireMonmouth Library will host a wellbeing event on Tuesday 15th April open to the county’s 11 to 25 year olds.

Running from 1 to 5pm the afternoon will feature a range of local organisations including Macmillan Cancer Support, Hope Support Services, Monmouthshire Youth Service, Gwent Cancer Support and the council’s Sports Development team to help young people stay healthy, reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases and receive support when a family member is affected by life limiting illness.

Information will be available about eating well, staying active and how to stop smoking.

The library will also launch its new cancer information area for young people complete with booklets and other related material.

Activities will feature the opportunity to create a fruit smoothie using cycle-powered energy, mellow out with a gentle tai chi taster, take a selfie holding the larger than life Macmillan coffee mug, learn to knit and crochet or participate in a giant artwork.  This will reside in the new young persons’ cancer information area and will be based on the theme of family.

Shared reading sessions will offer a chance to unwind listening to a great story read by library staff while fun competitions will be held as well as a short story writing challenge with prizes and certificates for those attending.

Cabinet member for libraries, County Councillor Bob Greenland said:

“Regular users will know that libraries are about much more than books and this event is another example of an occasion where the service has joined with other organisations to promote a truly valuable event for young people. If you haven’t visited your local library for years, as is the case with some people, then I would urge you to pop in.  You will be in for a pleasant surprise”

All six libraries in Monmouthshire have cancer information areas with a variety of booklets to help people to live well with and beyond cancer and to help their friends and family to find out more about the disease.

Libraries also offer drop in cancer information sessions and can be contacted for one to one sessions at other times.  Ask in your local library for more information, visit www.libraries.monmouthshire.org.uk for a timetable or contact the Macmillan Coordinator, Erica Sheppard on 07826876772 or email [email protected]
