Monmouth set to Benefit from Enhanced Leisure Facilities thanks to Local Building Developments Funding

MonmouthshireMonmouthshire County Council has agreed to fund eleven projects to benefit the town of Monmouth and its residents.  The decision to create a £439,000 budget was reached at a cabinet meeting in County Hall, Usk on Wednesday 4th June.

The money will be drawn from Section 106 agreements – contributions from developers to help offset demands on local facilities due to an increase of residents in communities – and follows developments at the Croft-y-Bwla (Rockfield Rd), the Almhouses at St James’ Square and former Wyesham School sites.

The council engaged with the town council which submitted its views following a meeting last month.

Projects featured in a £333,146 budget for 2014/15 include:

  • Monmouth Petanque Club – Floodlighting of Petanque Terrain (£9,962)
  • Monmouth Off Street Project – New skatepark and pump track (£100,000)
  • Wyesham Scouts – All weather outdoor area/disabled facilities (£15,985)
  • Monmouth Town Council – New play area in Osbaston (£21,083)
  • Wyesham Play Project – New play area at Tudor Road, Wyesham (£70,000)

  • Monmouth Rugby Club – Pitch works and floodlighting (£30,000)
  • Transition Monmouth – Wyesham Community Woodland (£21,000)
  • Monmouth Town Council – Drybridge nature park improvements (£18,525)

Funding for two projects administered by the county council – the Gateway Monmouth Project (£50,000) and a new destination play area for the town (£85,000) – will be made available when a second contribution of £106,428 from the Croft-y-Bwla site is received from the developer.

County Councillor Bob Greenland, cabinet member with responsibility for Innovation, Enterprise & Leisure said: “These schemes will help to boost Monmouth’s leisure facilities and are a welcome addition to a town that recently featured in the Sunday Times as one of the top three places to live in the country”.
