Monmouthshire County Council’s promised replacement for the Abergavenny livestock market will formally open on Friday 29th November at 11am. The Monmouthshire Livestock Centre, which will be opened by BBC Countryfile’s Adam Henson, delivers on a promise made to the farmers of Monmouthshire of a new, fit for purpose livestock market.
The new market will begin operating before the end of the year, which will allow the redevelopment of the current livestock market in Abergavenny to kick start the promised redevelopment of the town.
Cllr Bob Greenland, Monmouthshire County Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration, said: “I’m delighted that the work on the project to build the promised replacement livestock market for Monmouthshire has run to schedule and that the market will open in late autumn, as we promised. The first sales will be held there before the end of the year. At that point, we’ll close the existing market in Abergavenny town centre to allow the construction of a new Morrisons supermarket, which will kick start a wider regeneration of the town.”
Tom Davies, operations manager at leading UK construction company Morgan Sindall which built the market, said:
“This is a huge project for both the County Council and the people of Monmouthshire who form the farming community here. 21st century farming needs the right facilities to best serve it, and the new livestock market will certainly meet these needs. We’re pleased to see the official opening of the market which Morgan Sindall has completed on time and to budget. We have been able to establish good contacts and grow our supply chain in South Wales through the lifetime of this project. Around 75 per cent of labour used on this job was indigenous, and we look forward to working closely with them again in the future.”
