Monmouthshire County Council has placed disability issues on the agenda by selecting an advocate to ensure a voice for disabled people. Crucorney councillor Andrew James was appointed to the role of Member Disability Champion at October’s county council meeting and he will support and raise awareness of disability issues across the county as well as undertake positive action to address the under-representation of disabled people in Monmouthshire. The disabled are traditionally under-represented in public life.
Councillor James will complement and support the existing work of the council on disability issues while also ensuring that they are taken into account when policy is developed and decisions are made. This work should lead to more effective services for disabled people in Monmouthshire.
Following his appointment, Councillor James outlined his commitment to the role and the opportunities it presented for disabled people. He said: “I would like to thank fellow members for electing me to this position. I feel very proud and honoured to accept this duty, as it is a very worthwhile post to uphold and champion on behalf of the disabled people of Monmouthshire“.
