Monmouthshire looks forward to celebrating Libraries Fortnight

Monmouthshire’s libraries are standing by to celebrate Libraries Fortnight, a programme of free events for all the family across Wales to be launched at Cardiff Central Library on 2nd November by Olympic Silver medallist Jamie Baulch and Paralympic thrower Nathan Stephens.  The theme linking all events is the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad programme which inspires creativity across all forms of culture, especially among young people.

Jamie commented, “It’s great to see libraries across Wales getting involved in celebrating London 2012 and everyone inspired to organise so many different events for all ages and interests.”

Nathan, IPC World Champion who is aiming for gold in London next year added: “I’m delighted to be supporting Libraries Fortnight and would urge everyone, especially those that haven’t visited a library lately, to see what’s available on their doorstep.”

Lots of activities have been arranged in Monmouthshire during Libraries Fortnight.  One very special event will feature illustrator Chris Fisher encouraging students from Caldicot School and members of the U3A Art Group to draw pictures featuring the Twitter avatar for Caldicot Library, @fablibrarian.

Heritage Minister Huw Lewis commented: “Libraries Fortnight is a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy the benefits of their local library.  Not only do they organise a diverse range of events all year round, they also offer the latest bestsellers, free internet access, DVDs, and a great starting point if you are doing research of any kind whether it be for your studies or looking into your family tree.  Together with our programme of refurbishing and modernising libraries across Wales, celebrations like Libraries Fortnight are meeting our One Wales commitment to promote the public library network.”
