Monmouthshire County Council staff were on hand throughout the weekend (Friday 31st January – Monday 3rd February) to support communities in the face of predicted storms and tidal flooding.
Although the county was not as badly affected as other parts of the UK, Tintern suffered some tidal flooding and plummeting temperatures led us to grit a substantial part of the county’s highway network.
In preparation for predicted tidal flooding in Tintern, they closed the A466 through the village 20 minutes each side of the high tide both morning and evenings, Friday and Saturday, Sunday morning and Monday morning. They also issued sandbags to residents.
They gritted roads throughout the county on Friday night in preparation for cold weather and some minor snow flurries. They also carried out limited gritting on Saturday night. The weather forecast remains unsettled and our people will remain prepared for whatever the current difficult weather conditions can throw at them.
Cllr Bryan Jones, Cabinet Member for County Operations, said:
“Fortunately conditions were not as bad as had been predicted. But that is scant comfort to those who did suffer from the effects of flooding, heavy rain and wind. I’m really proud of the work our people have done to support our communities throughout these difficult weather conditions which, don’t forget, began before Christmas. With further difficult weather conditions predicted, I can assure the people of Monmouthshire that we will continue to be on hand to support them and deal with the effects of wind, rain and tide and much as we can.”
