Glyn Davies, MP for Montgomeryshire, has today welcomed the news that Welsh Government has bought the house of convicted murderer Mark Bridger with a view to demolishing it.
Bridger was convicted in May 2013 of the abduction and murder of 5 year old April Jones near Machynlleth. The trial followed a concerted effort by local people, and a massive Facebook campaign, to find April, with communities worldwide showing solidarity with April’s family by wearing or displaying a pink ribbon.
The house which Bridger rented, a detached holiday cottage in Ceinws, has been bought by the Welsh Government for £149,000 – the price paid by the owner in 2008.
Glyn Davies, commenting on the purchase and the plans to demolish the house, said:
“I welcome Welsh Government’s decision to purchase and demolish Mark Bridger’s house, which shows sensitivity to April Jones’s family and all those who gave their time and effort to search for her after she disappeared.
“This house witnessed a truly horrific act, which shocked a small community and appalled the world. It is good news that it is to be demolished.
“April Jones was a bright and happy girl. Her loss brought the world together in solidarity and in mourning. It is right that we remember her life and act as her parents, Paul and Coral Jones would want. The Welsh Government has made the right decision.”
