Montgomeryshire Politicians meet Bypass Contractors

Glyn Davies MPMontgomeryshire politicians, Russell George and Glyn Davies, have met (Monday 2nd December) senior members of the project team that will design and build the Newtown Bypass.

During a lengthy meeting in Newtown, the two Montgomeryshire representatives met one of the directors of Alan Griffiths Contractor Ltd, David Rowlands, as well as senior members of the design and communications team, Richard Bruten and Emma Davies, who are charged with ensuring the Bypass is delivered on time and on budget. Welsh Government officials were also present at the meeting and there was a detailed discussion on what the project mile stones were for the coming year.

In a separate meeting, Mr George met with several landowners that will be affected by the Bypass development, in a bid to understand their concerns and to ensure they are properly represented and where appropriate, properly compensated.

Commenting, Glyn Davies said:

“This was an extremely useful meeting and I’m pleased that the contractors reaffirmed their commitment to ensure construction starts in 2015.

“The Bypass is a vitally important piece of infrastructure not just for Newtown but for the whole of Wales.

“This new bypass will not only improve journey times but will also help further the economic development of the region.”

Mr George added:

“I was pleased to hear from both the contractors and Welsh Government, the degree of importance and urgency they have placed upon this scheme and how keen they are to see it completed.

“Of course there are a number of landowners that will be affected and I will continue to work closely with them to try and get their concerns resolved.”

The AM is also undertaking his own public survey work, in a bid to capture the widest range of local views on what are the fundamental transport challenges in the Newtown and Llanidloes area.

He is encouraging people to complete a short transport survey in which he is asking local residents a range of questions including what short-term solutions they would like to see implemented to resolve Newtown congestion.

Commenting, Mr George said:

“Seeking public opinion on key issues like transport, which affects people on a daily basis, is a key aspect of my role as the local AM.

“The survey is very short and can be completed online.

“The data I collect will provide me with robust evidence which I can use to highlight these issues with Welsh Ministers.”
