More chance than ever for kids to get active

Children across Swansea are being given more opportunities than ever to participate in sport and physical activity.

Swansea Council is giving children’s sport a huge boost with the introduction of new courses aimed at getting young people more active.

Improvements have been made to the programme of children’s activities available in Active Swansea’s sports and leisure centres to cater for demand and the Council has increased the number of spaces available to local children.

There are now 188 extra spaces available in gymnastics courses in Active Swansea centres across the city. More will be added during February along with introduction of Street Cheer courses at Bishopston Sports Centre and trampoline courses at Cefn Hengoed Leisure Centre and Pentrehafod Sports Centre.

Dave Osborne, Swansea Council’s Indoor Leisure Manager, said: “I’m happy to announce the extra gymnastics spaces being created in our Active Swansea sports and leisure centres.

“Gymnastics not only gives participants a huge amount of pleasure but also encourages self-confidence and develops motivated, fit and happy people.

“Participation in gymnastics also develops body awareness, strength, flexibility, control and co-ordination and these attributes can be drawn upon in other sports as well as in in everyday life.

“Our whole range of children’s sporting activities including rugby, football, tennis and swimming is proving popular with local parents and children. We’ve seen a significant increase in participation levels over the last year and this is partly because of the extra spaces that have been created.”
