Motorcycle thefts in Monmouthshire – Owners warned to be vigilant

Monmouthshire police officers are urging motorcycle owners to be vigilant after a number of thefts of bikes during March, April and May.

In total, 8 bikes have been stolen from the Abergavenny, Monmouth and Caldicot area. The main types of motorbike stolen have been either Suzuki or Honda.

Inspector Mike Boycott said, “We are encouraging motorcycle owners to review the security of their bikes and be more vigilant. Thieves will always look for opportunities where security is lax, don’t make things easy for them.”

Officers are offering the following advice to bike owners;

  • When leaving your bike for some time, try to lock it to something secure. At home, you can fit a special attachment to lock your bike.
  • Always try and lock your bike away in a secure garage or away from sight.
  • Fit a bike alarm.
  • Use a motorbike cover
  • Have the motorbike marked with its vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • When purchasing security devices, make sure that all devices are either Thatcham or Sold Secure approved as these are meet the highest standards.
  • Don’t leave helmets of other possessions with your bike.
  • When driving home, be aware of any vehicles that may be following you.
  • When cleaning and maintaining your bike, do this away from view if possible – don’t advertise your bike to thieves.
