MP Backs Bid to Make Wrexham a ‘Dementia Friendly’ Town

424px-Ian_LucasWrexham MP Ian Lucas has lent his support to campaigners working to make Wrexham a dementia friendly town.

Mr Lucas met with Anita Moran, from the Purple Angel campaign, earlier this year to discuss its aims. Campaigners want to work with shops and services in Wrexham to help raise awareness of dementia and to make the town “dementia friendly” and welcoming to people with dementia.

Mr Lucas has worked with the Purple Angel campaign, Wrexham council and other groups to set up two sessions for local businesses to help them discover more about the campaign – these will be held on May 21 and 22.

In a letter to businesses asking them to attend the sessions, Mr Lucas states: “Dementia is not limited to very elderly, frail people in care homes. Many people with dementia are now caring for themselves. They may be out in Wrexham, with or without support, and will be coming into contact with your members of staff.

“Wrexham has always had the reputation of being a friendly, welcoming and tolerant town and it would be wonderful if we could achieve ‘Dementia Friendly’ status.”

Speaking yesterday, Mr Lucas said: “Towns across Britain are working towards achieving ‘Dementia Friendly’ status and the Purple Angel campaign’s very worthy aim is to secure that status for Wrexham and to help people with dementia feel welcome in our town.

“I was delighted to be able to help and I would urge businesses to respond to the invitations which they have received about the events later this month.”
