A Wrexham MP has said he is “confident” that North Wales’ local authorities are committed to getting the best from proposed rail upgrades in the region.
Ian Lucas spoke after holding a series of meetings with various council officers from across North Wales to discuss proposed rail upgrades, including the dualling of much of the Wrexham to Chester line which has been confirmed by the Welsh Government. The discussions also touched on proposed improvements which the coalition Government is still considering including the electrification of the Wrexham to Liverpool line, the North Wales coast line and others.
Following the meetings this week, Mr Lucas says that there is a great deal of agreement among council officials that the region must secure the best services possible from the changes.
He said:
“After these meetings, I am confident we are moving in the right direction. The officials who I have met with have told me that they believe there will be the capacity for additional services following the re-dualling of the Wrexham to Chester line, which is good news. I was also impressed at the willingness of local authorities to work together on these issues – it is important that all those who have an interest in developing our rail network work together and I am pleased to see that happen at council level.
“I will continue to do all I can to help move these projects forward and have been heartened by what I heard this week.”
