During Prime Minister’s Questions Roger Williams, Lib Dem MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, asked the Prime Minister if the Government will investigate how they can benefit off-grid customers, who often live in fuel poverty.
Off-grid gas in rural areas affects many communities and there should be a larger focus on getting people connected to the mains gas. People who are off-grid have to use dear fuel for heating and cooking and cannot benefit from Dual Fuel Tariffs.
Commenting, Roger Williams MP said:
“Many people in rural areas, including Brecon and Radnorshire, do not benefit from mains gas and have to depend on more expensive fuels. High fuel prices are a constant concern for my constituents and people right across the UK. Earlier this year I secured a debate on Cold Homes and Fuel Poverty in the House of Commons to highlight this problem. Connecting villages to the mains gas will make a huge difference to fuel poverty. I shall continue to press for further action on mains gas in rural areas, as it is a huge concern for many rural communities in Brecon and Radnorshire.
“I was disappointed by the Prime Minister’s response, because I have been pushing for the Government to replicate the relief given to consumers on mains electricity and gas bills for off-grid customers. They will not benefit from the action taken by central government. I have already been investigating the possibility of group buying for liquid petroleum gas and heating oil, as suggested by the Prime Minister. But I will now meet with suppliers across the constituency to see if I can encourage them to cooperate with groups to bring down the cost of fuel.”
