Glyn Davies, Conservative MP for Montgomeryshire, has welcomed an increased commitment by UK retailers and consumers to stocking and buying British food.
Glyn Davies, who for much of his life was a producer of Welsh beef and lamb, has joined with the Montgomeryshire NFU in backing British food. This week, Deputy President of the NFU Meurig Raymond spoke at the AGM of the Montgomeryshire branch and focused his comments on the latest figures from supermarkets showing increases in the proportion of home produced beef and lamb in UK stores.
Mr Raymond said:
“The latest figures on beef & lamb show improvements across the board although some supermarkets are still doing better than others. The fact that Morrisons is consistently stocking both 100% British beef and lamb is a shining example that I hope other retailers will follow. “
Supporting the NFU Deputy Chairman’s speech Glyn Davies commented:
“I have always backed campaigns to persuade British supermarkets to stock British produce and British shoppers to buy British produce whenever possible. It’s really welcome news that our supermarkets are recognising the importance of playing a significant part in supporting British producers.
“I particularly welcome the decision of Morrisons to stock 100% British beef and lamb. I hope other retailers will do the same. Not only does this policy help the British economy but it also helps the environment by shortening the supply chain. Let’s all support Britain by buying British.”
