Music students go live

Listen up music fans! Great news for those who never miss the chance to go to a gig – Coleg Gwent’s music students are set to stage an exciting night of live music on Thursday 17 March.  Unlike most professional event organisers however, students will be appearing on the bill themselves as they transform from organisers into stars of the show.

Showcasing the best of local talent, the event will feature punk, indie and folk rock bands including Foreign Legion, The Canal Dippers, Last of Our Kind and High Demand, as well as performances from Coleg Gwent’s own music students.

Managing everything from sound and lighting to promotion and performance, the group from Coleg Gwent’s Ebbw Vale Campus are getting to grips with all aspects of putting on a live event.  They’ve been pulling out all the stops to make the event a success, and even secured a live slot on local radio to promote the show.

“We are really excited about organising our live music event, and keen to show what we can do musically,” says music student Julian Williams. “It’ll be a fantastic night of live performance with plenty of popular music, so I’d encourage everyone to come along and support Welsh music talent.”

Radio listeners got a sneak preview of the event this week when students took over the airwaves on local radio station BRFM to promote their gig.  Speaking about their slot Julian said: “We’re really grateful to BRFM for letting us perform live on air.  It was an amazing experience for us, and hopefully gave people the opportunity to tune in for a taste of the gig later this month.  As well as interviews with band members we played live popular music from 50s 60s & 70s, plus rockabilly, rock, country and punk.”
