A secondary school governing body clerk from Gwynedd has come to the fore in an all-Wales competition for “outstanding clerks”.
Nerys Williams, clerk to the governors of Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen, Bethesda has been awarded in a competition for Welsh schools – coming first from all school governing bodies throughout Wales.
“I am delighted to receive this award which recognises and raises the profile of the work of school governing body clerks on a national level. I feel extremely lucky to be in a post within my own community and doing work which contributes to the community,” said Nerys Williams.
“I appreciate being nominated and it’s a real privilege to fly the flag for Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen!”
Nerys received the award which was adjudged by “Governors Wales” by Assembly Government Education Minister, Leighton Andrews in a ceremony held recently in The Pavillion, Llandrindod.
The aim of the awards is to celebrate the contribution of clerks to the efficiency or governing bodies, and in doing so, encouraging them to develop their role and improve the support they can offer to governing bodies.
Nerys, who has worked as part of Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen administrative staff for almost 20 years has been the governing bodies for the same period, and she plays a key role according to Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen Headteacher, Mr Alun Llwyd.
“As staff at Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen we take great pride in the fact that Nerys, quite deservingly, has secured the award for her hard work at the school, and particularly as clerk to the school governors. She is concsientious, extremely diligent, and carries out her work without any fuss,” he said.
Councillor Liz Saville Roberts, Gwynedd Council Education Portfolio Leader noted:
“Gwynedd’s governing bodies play a vitally important role in the success of our primary and secondary schools. The clerk of a governing body can make a significant difference to the way a school succeeds and develops.
“It is wonderful to see the tireless work of school governors’ staff being recognised in a national awards ceremony. Many congratulations to Nerys and Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen on their success. This national recognition underlines her dedication to her work.”
As the Wales winner, Nerys will go on to compete against three other clerks from England to choose the winner for Wales and England. This award will be presented at a ceremony at eh House of Commons in London on 12 April.
