National Bookstart Day is being celebrated by Neath Port Talbot libraries (Wednesday October 7th 2pm)
Children aged four years and under are invited along to a song and rhyme time session hosted by Port Talbot library. The nursery rhyme event includes a magic show and a competition with lots of prizes to be won.
Bookstart is run by Booktrust, an independent national charity that encourages people of all ages and cultures to discover and enjoy reading.
Every child in the UK is given a gift from Bookstart of free books at around eight months and then again at 18-24 months. Parents and carers are given guidance to help children to become interested in reading through a range of fun activities.
“Bookstart helps all children to develop a lifelong love of books,” says Council Leader Ali Thomas.
“Local councils and primary care trusts play a vital role in helping Bookstart to encourage families to read together from as young an age as possible.
“Enjoying books from babyhood builds the foundation for early literacy and develops a child’s confidence as a learner.”
Bookstart Coordinator Pam Lawson, added, “Humpty Dumpty, Little Bo Peep and even Incy Wincy Spider are out in force next month to celebrate National Bookstart Day.
“This year’s programme will offer millions of children and parents the chance to discover the joy of reading together.
“In turn this improves the life chances of children – giving them the best possible chance in life.
“Parents can see for themselves the fun, enjoyment and benefits of bringing young children to story times.”
