National School Meals Week 2011 – 7 to 11 November

Children and teenagers around Britain will be able to learn about food from around the world as part of this year’s National School Meals Week.

Each day of the week has a different theme with Tuesday 8 November being Get Travelling. This day is supported by Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA) partner, Bernard Matthews Foodservice.

As part of the day, the school cook at Ysgol Bro Carmel, Debbie Peace, is cooking up dishes from Mexico. On the menu will be Turkey Festive Fajitas and Mexican Mayhem. To create a true Mexican atmosphere the school will be putting up flags, playing music from the country and staff will be dressing up.

Councillor Nigel Steele-Mortimer, Executive Member for Education, said:

“National School Meals Week is a great initiative. It’s important that young people get to try different food in a fun environment, and the Week gives them the perfect opportunity to do this.”

Vicky Bell, Catering Services Manager at Flintshire County Council, said:

“Ysgol Bro Carmel is really excited about taking part in Get Travelling Day. Pupils love theme days especially when there’s something different on the menu! It helps to encourage children to be more adventurous with what they eat, and it’s great when children really enjoy their food.”
