National School Sports Week in Flintshire

Argoed High School was one of 35 schools in the county which took part in National School Sports Week with pupils taking part in table tennis and volleyball taster sessions, as well as a school rowing and long jump competition culminating with the School Sports Day.

The aim of National Schools Sports Week is to celebrate sport for primary and secondary schools across Britain. The aim for this year was to achieve a personal best in an Olympic or Paralympic Sport. The Young Ambassadors and 5×60 Officer from the school chose four Olympic sports for pupils to try and 200 pupils got involved.

The week of sport at the Argoed was run by the 5×60 Officer, Gordon Rodger, the Young Ambassadors, Lucy Byrne, Charlotte Williams, Alexandra Pugh, Jake Hayden and Dominic Morris. The role of a Young Ambassador involves increasing participation in school sport and PE, spreading the word of the Olympic and Paralympic Values and promoting the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The aim of the 5×60 programme within schools is to engage as many young people in sport and physical activity and to give them skills which will last them for life. Gordon said, “National School Sports Week is an excellent way to showcase and try new events whilst engaging and having fun”. These views were shared by Mr Paul Smith, Head of PE, who said, “The week has been a great success and the pupils have got fully engaged and had lots of fun”. Year 8 pupil who took part in the week, Sam Reilly said, “I loved taking part in the table tennis, and the best moment for me was beating Mr Rodger and I can’t wait to take part in more sports in the future.”

Thirty five schools across the county took part in National School Sports Week, Matt Hayes the Active Young People Manager for Sports Flintshire said, “It was fantastic to see so many schools take part in National School Sports Week and promote the Olympics and Paralympics within the county.

“Sport Flintshire aims to engage all schools in National School Sports in the build up to the 2012 Olympics.”
