Neath has secured Fairtrade status for the second consecutive year.
The town won the accolade last year, after meeting the criteria to have several businesses and retail outlets serving Fairtrade products. Neath Port Talbot County was awarded Fairtrade Status in 2007.
The Neath Port Talbot Fairtrade Forum were pleased to announce that Neath has achieved Fairtrade Town Status for the second year running after continuing to meet the criteria.
A total of 19 retail outlets and 9 catering outlets in Neath stock Fairtrade products – a list of these can be found on the website www.nptftf.org.uk.
The town’s Fairtrade Forum was also praised for engaging with schools, community groups and faith groups and for setting up a Fairtrade Facebook group.
Neath Port Talbot Council leader Ali Thomas has congratulated the Forum for all their hard work during the past year.
The Fairtrade Forum are urging all residents to do their bit and take part in Fairtrade Fortnight (22 February – 7 March), which promises to be the most ambitious two weeks yet.
The Fairtrade Foundation want one million and one people to join them in The Big Swap. In NPT we will be asking everyone to swap their usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff; your usual wine, sugar, or oranges for Fairtrade wine, sugar or oranges. Each swap will be proof that we want developing world producers to get a fairer deal.
Look out for a range of events taking place over Fairtrade Fortnight – a Coffee Producer talk will take place with a Fairtrade lunch – further details will be on our website shortly.
The Fairtrade Forum work closely with the Climate Change Unit in Neath Port Talbot Council you can contact the Environmental Change Officer for further information on Fairtrade on 01639 686845.
