22 volunteers from Neath Port Talbot all aged between 17 and 18 completed a six month course to achieve the Basic Expedition Leaders Award (BELA).
Funded and delivered by Neath Port Talbot Youth Service it is a nationally recognised qualification that trains adults in all aspects in the preparation and execution of expeditions for young people. On completing the course volunteers are then able to work with young people who are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.
As part of the scheme young people must complete an expedition, spend three hours a week volunteering in their local communities, undertake a physical recreational pursuit and learn a new skill.
Council Leader Cllr Ali Thomas said “Neath Port Talbot has proved to be the national leader in recruiting and maintaining young people as volunteers. Through giving their time, they allow hundreds of other young adults in Neath Port Talbot the opportunity to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. They are now a team of trained, experienced, committed volunteers that are able to take on real responsibility with real consequences.”
