The Minister for Health and Social Services, Mark Drakeford AM, joined local AM, Ann Jones and MP Chris Ruane to visit the new A&E department at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, ahead of its opening on June 5th.
Ms Jones said: “The new emergency department is an impressive development that comes off a £90m redevelopment of the hospital.
“This significant investment from the Welsh Labour Government will ensure that services can be delivered more easily and effectively in the future and can help to meet the ever increasing demands on our NHS.
“The Welsh Government is determined to improve health services in our area and this investment shows that the Welsh Government understands the need that our hospitals need renovation in order to be equipped for the demands of the next few decades. I am very pleased with the work done and believe it will provide better services for patients and a better and more productive working environment for staff”.
The new larger facility means that the GP out-of-hours service, emergency department, acute medicine unit and surgical assessment unit can all come together under one roof. There is also a separate minors and major illness/injury area, a new paediatrics area, new clinical decision unit, new resus room and separate ambulance entrance and storage for crews.
The redevelopment of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd includes removing asbestos from the hospital – it was commonly used as a fire retardant in the 1970s when the hospital was built. This work has provided an opportunity to redesign and relocate a number of services, including emergency care. Other developments include a new critical care unit and new cardiac catheter laboratory.
“This massive investment by Welsh Government into local health services is certainly very welcome” said Chris Ruane MP for Vale of Clwyd.
“Not only will patients and visitors see benefits from these improvements but also staff.
“This is a huge commitment by Welsh Government to improve services for the people of North Wales.”
