Wales is a geologist’s paradise acording to author Chris Fletcher, and a his new book Rock Tales aims to popularise the study of rocks and especially tha fantastic geology of Anglesey.
Anglesey has recently been awarded Geopark status. However the subject is generally a hidden world to most people and guide books on the subject are aimed at the aficionados This book opens everyone’s eyes, both adults and children alike, to the hidden mysteries and delights of the rocks that outcrop along the shores of Anglesey. The story of the rocks is revealed to children through a mystical tale of giants and dragons, whereas adults will learn about the many geological phenomena that have shaped this unique island through hundreds of millions of the years.
Chris Fletcher has been walking along the shores of Anglesey for over forty years, both as a keen walker but also as a professional geologist. Not wanting to write another geological guidebook, Chris has used photographs, water colour illustrations and amusing cartoons by Harry Harrison, a leading political cartoonist from Hong Kong, to ensure his book appeals to the inquiring minds of both young and old. A series of sketch maps help you locate each of the outcrops in places including Rhosneigr, Red Warf Bay, South Stack, Llanddwyn Island and Lligwy Bay. Rock Tales is a great way to turn a family walk into a voyage of discovery along the shoreline.
Chris Fletcher said: “I wanted the rocks of Anglesey to be become part of a children’s learning experience. I hope this book will allow children to observe and think about rocks in a light-hearted and enjoyable way. But adults will also be introduced to past geological environments that have shaped this wonderful island.”
Rock Tales will be launched at The Outbuildings, Llangaffo, Anglesey on the 11th of August at 4.30.
