A facility that provides respite at one of the extra care housing schemes in Denbighshire has been completely renovated and is being re-launched to the public.

The Nant y Môr Extra Care Scheme on Marine Road, Prestatyn comprises of 59 apartments – 27 one bedroom, 32 two bedroom and was built by Wales & West Housing, in partnership with Denbighshire County Council.

Facilities at the extra care scheme include communal facilities (restaurant, gardens, a hairdresser and a hobby room). Each apartment within the purpose built complex each have their own front door, they are all wheelchair accessible and there are 24 hours a day care services available.

Another vital facility at Nant y Môr is a respite flat. Over the past 12 months it has been used to provide respite to carers, used as emergency respite accommodation and has provided an alternative to a period of short term care in a residential setting.

The facility has recently been renovated and a re-launch event will take place on Friday, 29 January at 2pm. The event will give people the chance to visit the flat, see the renovation works that have taken place, discuss options available to future users and meet with staff from Denbighshire County Council and Wales & West Housing.

Councillor Bobby Feeley, Denbighshire’s Cabinet Lead Member for Health and Social Care, said: “The extra care facilities have been developed at Nant y Môr, in partnership with Wales & West Housing, to allow people to continue living independently, but with professional support available 24 hours a day if it’s needed.

“There is more demand than ever for extra care housing, with people telling us they prefer to live independent lives rather than going down other more traditional routes. Denbighshire is responsible for the provision of care and support to residents and provides individually tailored care packages to residents living at the scheme.

“The respite flat is a vital part of the offer at Nant y Môr and offers an important service to individuals and their families, as well as providing an insight into life at an extra care scheme and its benefits to the health and well-being of people considering this option”.

Anne Hinchey, Chief Executive of Wales & West Housing, said: “Now in its fourth year, Nant y Mor has really made a difference to its residents, with its fantastic facilities and excellent support service. It’s lovely to see the residents enjoying living at the scheme and the respite flat provides the perfect opportunity for people to see for themselves the benefits of living there.”
