New chapter planned for Rhyl Library

A brand new chapter will begin in the history of Rhyl Library as work on a major revamp of facilities gets underway later this summer.

The new look modernised library will include new layout of shelves and seating, hundreds of new books, a new look children’s and teens libraries, new computers and free WiFi and a self service option for borrowing and returning books.

The refurbishment begins in September and as a result, Rhyl Library will close at 12.30pm on Wednesday, 25 August, re-opening at 9.30am on Tuesday, 31 August. This will allow time for Denbighshire Library Service to set up a temporary library in the art gallery located in the same building.

Denbighshire Library Service would like to stress that it will be business as usual during the works. People will still be able to borrow books, audio books, DVDs and read newspapers and magazines in a temporary library that will be set up in the art gallery.

People can use a computer in a room in the foyer for short time slots, library staff will be able to help with enquiries for information and study, the Llandrillo Collegh Second Chance centre and IT classes will be held in Morfa Hall and Bookstart rhymetimes will be held in the library meeting room, as usual.

Councillor Pauline Dobb, Cabinet Lead Member will responsibility for libraries, said: “This is a major development that will enhance the facilities for the people who use the wide range of services already on offer at the library.

” There are now many facilities on offer, including free access to the internet and the library is used for many community based activities and learning.  This really is an exciting chapter in the history of Rhyl library and we look forward to the re-opening in early 2011 when the new look library officially opens its doors to a whole new world of facilities.”

The refurbishment is being funded as part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s £10.5 million Libraries for Life programme which aims to attract more people to use improved facilities and services at libraries.  This money supports two One Wales commitments to develop, promote and modernise the public library network and develop the use of information technology in libraries.
