Coleg Gwent student Mischa Ross has been named President of Coleg Gwent Students’ Union for the coming year.
Mischa was elected after a close contest of extensive campaigning and presidential hustings and alongside fellow candidates and students Ian Rees and Charlotte Sharman.
The 2014 elections registered record participation figures with an outstanding 866 students voting and having their say in the election of their new representative. Learners were also able to watch the three candidates giving a speech and to ask them questions.
Mischa will be taking up her new position as President of Coleg Gwent Students’ Union next September, becoming the first female Black Sabbatical President in Wales.
Mischa Ross said: “I’d like to thank Adam Smith and Jennie Dowsell from CGSU for their work and supporting all three of us during the election process, as well as my fellow candidates, Ian Rees and Charlotte Sharman, they were both excellent and I enjoyed spending a week of hustings with them. I’d also like to thank all the students who got involved in the presidential elections, whoever you voted for.”
Jennie Dowsell, Learner Voice Coordinator, said: “Mischa is already a strong student activist and takes part in NUS Women’s campaigns nationally. Mischa is a strong advocate for Equality and Diversity. She also has valuable experience in FE, HE and work, and life in general, being a mature student. She is keen to get started with setting up more clubs and societies to get learners involved next year and we are looking forward to working with her.”
