New Daniel Owen connections at Mold Museum

A new display will be unveiled at Mold Museum on Thursday 20 October as part of the town’s week-long Daniel Owen Festival.

The Edwards family, whose ancestor, the Reverend Roger Edwards, was an inspiration and mentor to Daniel Owen, have donated an MBE awarded to Dr Roger Bellis Edwards in 1918 for his work in the Leeswood Hall Military Hospital in the First World War.

‘Dr Roger’, as he was known, was a GP in Mold from 1911 until 1955 and was appointed High Sheriff for Flintshire in 1957.

Also connected to Daniel Owen, the famous 19th century Welsh novelist, are tailor’s scissors and measuring tapes from Owen’s outfitter’s shop in Mold, which will be on display for the first time.

Other recent acquisitions, which will feature in the new display, include a quilt made for Margaret Felix, headteacher at Mold Board School, in 1905 and embroidered with the names of all the pupils and teachers, as well as items from the ironmongers, E. Price, a long-standing business at The Cross in Mold.

A talk by Christopher Edwards, ‘The Presence of Roger Edwards’ (Daniel Owen’s mentor) will be given on Thursday 20 October at Bethesda Chapel at 7.30pm, cost £3.
