New developments in Ruthin extra care housing scheme

The new extra care home scheme in Ruthin has a brand new name – and a brand new Manager.

Llys Awelon, the extra care scheme is being built as an extension of the current Awelon Residential and Day Centre and will see 21 one and two bedroom apartments created in partnership by Denbighshire County Council and Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd with funding through the Welsh Government Social Housing Grant.

The current Awelon building will continue to function as a residential home, but with the current communal areas being refurbished and opened up to the extra care housing tenants.

This will provide joint communal facilities which will include hairdressers and treatment room, restaurant and communal lounges with coffee station.

Gwawr Adams has been appointed as the new scheme manager at Llys Awelon.

She has several years experience in customer services, and has been in post since April to prepare for when the tenants move into Llys Awelon.  Gwawr will transfer her skills developed in the hospitality industry to provide an excellent service to the customers.

Councillor Pauline Dobb, Cabinet Lead Member for Social Care, Health and Well-being, said: “Extra care housing is very much the way forward in Denbighshire. We have one of the highest populations of older people in Wales and the trend is that people are living longer. This in turn means that we need to adapt our services to meet a growing demand. That is a key priority for us in Denbighshire.

“The extra care scheme is being created to meet a demand from people wishing to live independent lives in their own home, whilst safe in the knowledge that help is at hand 24 hours a day.

“We are also delighted to welcome Gwawr to the Llys Awelon team. Her wealth of experience will be an asset to Llys Awelon and we look forward to working with Gwawr to ensure this scheme is a tremendous success.

People who have expressed an interest in moving into the new facility will be contacted, to allow the process of assessment and allocation of departments to take place.
