Sixteen volunteers have recently qualified as leaders for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme in Pembrokeshire, having successfully completed their Basic Expedition Leader Award courses.
The volunteers, aged between 17 and 51, had to attend six weekends of training between September and February in the North Pembrokeshire countryside.
The training included two overnight camping expeditions, night navigation on the Preseli Hills, training in first aid, instructional techniques, conservation and access, planning and preparation, and leadership and group management.
Most of the candidates have previously completed the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award themselves and have stayed on to become leaders.
They are now qualified to take groups of up to seven people hiking and camping anywhere in normal rural countryside in the British Isles, but the bulk of their work will be here in Pembrokeshire volunteering with our own Duke of Edinburgh’s Award groups.
