New facilities at Caernarfon park

Work is nearing completion on the first phase of major improvement works at Parc Coed Helen and the Aber foreshore in Caernarfon.

The upgrade which includes landscaping work, improvements to paths, nearby steps and new signs will also see a new picnic area, play equipment and shelter for the bowling green installed. Improvements will also include the installation of a unique large scale chess board.

The work has been funded through a grant of £70,000 from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Môn a Menai programme and £20,000 from Gwynedd Council.

Councillor Roy Owen, who leads on leisure matters for Gwynedd Council said:

“The park at Coed Helen is in a fantastic location, looking out over the Menai. We know that it is a popular destination with a number of people, and we are confident that these significant improvements will ensure that the park will offer something a little bit different to visitors of all ages.

“We were delighted to secure the funding for this important project from the Assembly Government’s Môn a Menai fund, as well as support from Gwynedd Council. Work on the first part of the improvements is now almost complete, and we are looking forward to seeing local residents and visitors to the area making the most of the new and improved facilities.“

The Welsh Assembly Government’s Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration Jocelyn Davies said:

“Improving the attractiveness and competitiveness of our town centres, along with enhancing the area’s tourism represent two of the key themes of the Môn a Menai regeneration Action Programme. The Welsh Assembly Government, through its Môn Menai initiative, is pleased to be working in partnership with Gwynedd Council to deliver new recreation and leisure assets which make Caernarfon a more attractive town to residents and visitors alike.”

It is expected that the first phase of improvements will be completed by early April. Further improvements will be carried out later this year.
