Works on the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s impressive new household waste recycling centre at the Atlantic Trading Estate in Barry have now been completed.
The Vale of Glamorgan Council and contractors Raymond Brown Construction Ltd have worked to ensure the state-of-the-art recycling facility remains on schedule to be open for public use in the spring.
Council Leader, Cllr Gordon Kemp, and Cabinet Member for Visible and Building Services, Cllr Geoff Cox, were pleased to see the recycling facilities first-hand recently with representatives from Raymond Brown – Site Agent Rob Bryan and Nikki Mitchell, Business Development Manager.
Cllr Kemp said: “The centre certainly looks impressive and the public will be able to recycle even more items conveniently once it opens. The new, modern recycling facility will be much larger than the two existing sites at Hayes Road and Llandow and should allow us all to achieve vital environmental benefits, while meeting recycling targets set by the Welsh Assembly Government. Once operational it will certainly benefit all.”
Cllr Cox added: “Now the work has been completed we are applying for an operating license from the Environment Agency, ensuring that the facilities comply with their rigid standards. We anticipate that this will be completed for the centre to be opened to the public in April 2011.”
A landscaping scheme is also due to be undertaken at the site, with planting and seeding taking place in February and March respectively next year to make the area look as attractive as possible. The landscaping contract will include an extended maintenance period for three years to safeguard the maturity of planting
Rob Bryan, Site Agent at Raymond Brown, said: “We are delighted to have worked closely with the Vale of Glamorgan Council to deliver this very exciting project. Our experience in this sector, providing purpose-built solutions for complete materials recovery, should ensure that Vale residents will be able to use a vastly improved state-of-the-art recycling facility in Barry.”
The Atlantic Trading Estate is located approximately three quarters of a kilometre away from the existing site at Hayes Road, Sully, and can be accessed by the same route conveniently by car. Besides allowing a greater range of waste materials to be recycled, queuing times will hopefully be reduced as the facility is considerably larger. Use of the existing Hayes Road centre is still to be confirmed.
