A newly refurbished temporary accommodation facility officially yesterday (Tuesday 6th May) in Newbridge.
Caerphilly County Borough Council has completely transformed Ty Croeso, the former family hostel in the town. The council-owned facility now boasts 10 en-suite rooms, as well as spacious communal areas. There are also two accessible units for wheelchair users and all rooms have been designed to meet Welsh Government’s temporary accommodation standards.
Ty Croeso will be managed by support provider The Wallich. The Wallich has been providing accommodation and support services for homeless people for over 30 years and currently works in 15 local authorities in Wales.
The project has been fully funded by the council and refurbishment works were carried out by local firm Ashcrofts Building Contractors Ltd.
The building was opened today by Cllr Gerald Jones, the council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, and Cllr Robin Woodyatt, Cabinet Member for Social Services.
Speaking at the opening, Cllr Gerald Jones said: “The council dedicates significant resources to offer housing advice and a range of housing options to help people avoid homelessness. For those cases where homelessness cannot be prevented, facilities like Ty Croeso are essential in providing short-term accommodation.
“This exciting project is one of a number of homeless schemes that have been completed in the county borough in recent years and it gives me great pleasure to officially open the building today, along with Cllr Woodyatt.”
Cllr Robin Woodyatt added: “Ty Croeso will provide high quality temporary accommodation for those in need, along with the support and assistance they need to help them move on to more permanent housing. We are extremely pleased to be working in partnership on this project with The Wallich.”
Antonia Watson, Chief Executive of The Wallich said: “We are absolutely delighted to have expanded our work, supporting vulnerable people, into a new local authority area and we’re looking forward to a long and successful partnership with Caerphilly County Borough Council.”
