Councillor Bill Langsford yesterday (Tuseday) became the mayor of Newport.
The latest in a long line of mayors dating back to the 14th century, Councillor Langsford received his chains of office in a ceremony in the civic centre.
His wife, Sue, was also made mayoress. The couple have been married for 39 years and have a son, Damian.
Councillor Langsford was brought up in Somerset and moved to Newport in 1966 where he met his wife when they were both working for British Rail.
A keen sports fan, he is season ticket holder at Somerset and Glamorgan County Cricket Clubs as well as Newport RFC and Newport Gwent Dragons.
Councillor Langsford was first elected to the council in 1995 and has represented Malpas since 1999. He has held a number of positions on the authority and has served as a governor at Malpas Court Primary School, Malpas Park Primary School, Bettws High School and Newport High School.
“I’m very proud to be first citizen during this special year for Newport. During my year of office I am looking forward to meeting people from all walks of life, especially young people, as well as promoting the city.”
His charity for the year is Tenovus which raises funds to help prevent, treat and find a cure for cancer while supporting patients.
Councillor Margaret Cornelious was also made deputy mayor. Her consort for the year will be her husband of 32 years, Ken. The couple have three children and five grandchildren.
Councillor Cornelious is a pharmacist who has worked at the Royal Gwent Hospital and is now a self-employed pharmacist. She represents the Graig ward and has undertaken many voluntary works.
