A painting of Monmouthshire by a talented young local artist has taken pride of place in Monmouthshire County Council’s new County Hall.
The painting, by former King Henry VIII pupil Ieuan Hatherall, depicts the county looking north from above the new Severn Crossing. The painting was commissioned by former County Chairman Cllr Maureen Powell, who has given the picture to the County Council on permanent loan.
Cllr Powell said:
“A few years ago when I was first a Governor at King Henry VIIIth School, I attended an exhibition of the pupils’ Art & Craft. I was so impressed with Ieuan’s talent. It stood out as exceptional. When I was Chairman last year, as one of my fund raising events I held an exhibition of Ieuan’s work at the Shire Hall. It was then that I thought it would be a good idea to get him to paint a picture to be hung in the new County Hall depicting Monmouthshire. Not wanting to single out one particular town he has produced this approach over the Severn Bridge into Monmouthshire.”
Ieuan is now studying Auto Design at college, but will still be painting in his spare time.
The painting, which measures 100cmx70cm, is now hanging in the reception area of Monmouthshire’s new County Hall.
