From Monday, 11 July 2011, a new experimental traffic order will come into force on the Maes in Caernarfon. It will mean that blue badge holders will only be eligible to park in designated spaces at various locations on the Maes. Designated areas will also be in place for taxis and coach drop offs, but no other motorists will be permitted to park on the square at any time.
In the meantime, the Council’s civil enforcement officers will be issuing an information letter about the changes to blue badge holders who park on the Maes before the changes come into force.
From 11 July, there will be eight designated parking spaces for blue badge holders on the Maes – anyone parking in any other area on the Maes can expect to receive a fixed penalty notice. Also, eight additional parking spaces have also been provided on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park, bringing the total parking spaces for blue badge holders at the multi-storey car park to 22.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Environment Portfolio Leader said:
“Following comments from members of the public regarding parking on the Maes in Caernarfon, the Council has decided to introduce new parking arrangements.
“Over recent weeks, the Council’s street enforcement officers have been drawing motorists’ attention to the upcoming changes and we hope that they heed the advice. The new arrangements will be monitored over the next eighteen months and if they work well, we will take steps to make the changes permanent.”
The temporary traffic order which comes into force from 11 July 2011 will introduce the following changes:
- no parking will be permitted on the Maes itself apart from in designated spaces. Blue badge holders will be able to park in eight designated spaces marked for disabled drivers; taxis will be able to park in the designated taxi rank and coaches will be able to drop off in the bus drop-off point. There will therefore be no parking allowed for any other motorist in the Maes area. This order will apply for 24 hours, seven days a week
- there are currently four spaces allocated for blue badge holders. This will increase to eight, one extra by the Syr Hugh Owen statue and three by the seats and bins near to the Pool Street entrance. Also, eight additional parking spaces have been provided on the ground floor of the multi storey car park
- the time allowed for parking in the blue badge holders designated bays on the Maes will be 90 minutes, no return within 90 minutes
- taxis will also be permitted to use the bus drop-off point between the hours of 5pm and 9am
- there are currently two taxi spaces on Segontium Terrace which will change to short term parking spaces (45 minutes, no return within 60 minutes)
- there will be no change to loading/unloading arrangements.
These changes will be enforced by the Council’s civil enforcement officers.
