The emotional health and wellbeing of preschool children has come  under the spotlight at an event in Narberth.

Emotional Health and Well-being is one action area of Pembrokeshire’s Health Promoting Pre-School Scheme.

It is the first and currently the only scheme of its kind in Wales to be accredited by the Welsh Assembly Government.

An event to highlight the emotional health aspect of the scheme recently took place at the Plas Hyfryd Hotel.

It included speakers and presentations which focused on attachment, early relationships, circle time, communication with parents, loss and bereavement.

The day was attended by some 60 guests, including representatives from nurseries all over the County, as well as professionals and partners who link in with them.

“The whole idea of this scheme is to support nurseries and help them to improve youngsters’ self-esteem and emotional health from a very early age,” said Councillor Sian James, Pembrokeshire County Council Cabinet Member for the Voluntary Sector, Health and Well-being.

The initiative is an extension of the Healthy School Scheme in pre-school settings which involves nurseries in activities around nutrition, oral hygiene, exercise, safety, environment, play and of course emotional health and well being.

It has been funded by the Well-being Activity Grant provided by the Welsh Assembly Government to help implement the well-being element of the Health, Social Care and Well-being Strategy.

The event was organised by the National Public Health Service with funding from Health Challenge Pembrokeshire.
