Plans for two new primary schools in Swansea are being considered by Cabinet this week.
The move follows the completion of consultation on plans for new schools serving pupils from the ages of three to 11 in the Clydach and Gorseinon areas.
Under the proposals, Clydach Infant and Junior schools would close with the creation of an all-through primary school on the existing sites.
Similarly Gorseinon Infant and Junior schools would close and create an all-through primary school on the existing sites.
The proposals have been prompted by the imminent retirement of the head teacher at Clydach Infant School and the head teacher at Gorseinon Junior School.
A report outlining the consultation feedback is going before Cabinet on June 2 and recommends members approve the plans and go to Statutory Notice.
Cllr Mike Day, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “Through the Council’s Quality in Education (QEd) 2020 programme we want to continue raising standards of achievement and attainment for all children and young people, to improve the quality of the learning environment and to make the best use of resources.
“As part of this drive Swansea Council is committed to providing all-through primary provision where possible to provide educational benefits and to allow schools more flexibility in how they use resources.
“The imminent retirement of head teachers in both areas has given us the opportunity to consider creating two all-through primary schools.”
If Cabinet give the plans the go-ahead a Statutory Notice will be published at the affected schools, local libraries, and in local media.
This is an opportunity for people to formally voice their views and, if there are any objections, the issue will be referred to a Minister at the Welsh Assembly Government to determine the outcome of the proposal.
