New School for Rhosymedre Given the Go Ahead

Plans to build a brand new school on the site of the existing Rhosymedre Junior school have been given the go ahead by Wrexham Council.

The development, worth nearly £5 million pounds will provide a 210 place primary school that will meet the educational needs and standards required in the 21st Century. The majority of the funding has been provided by the Welsh Assembly.

During the building work, which will see the junior school demolished, pupils will be taught in the infant school and mobile classrooms. No decision has yet been taken as to what will happen to the infant school building when all the works are completed.

The new school will have a U shaped layout and will conform to BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) which is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the industry standard used to describe a building’s environmental performance.

Sustainable features will include solar thermal panels to provide heating to the domestic hot water system for the kitchens and toilet facilities. Underfloor heating will be provided via a ground or air source heat pump unit. All light fittings will be of a high eficiency or LED light sources and lighting controls will be incorporated in the design to optimise the use of natural daylight.

Work will start on the site in August 2010 and should be completed in time for the September term 2011.

Cllr Aled Roberts, Wrexham Council Leader, said:

Wrexham Council has already invested over £75 million in improving building standards. This further investment, coupled with over £20 million to be invested in the three secondary schools, The Maelor, Darland and Bryn Alyn, shows that we are committed to providing an enhanced environment for our young people and staff to learn and teach in.”
