Torfaen’s council chamber hosted a school council meeting for a school that hasn’t yet welcomed its first pupils to its desks.
Nant Celyn Primary School, which will open in Cwmbran in September, takes pupils from the merged Brookfield and Hollybush schools.
And, with the state-of-the-art building nearing completion, it was time for a joint school council meeting in the civic centre chambers in Pontypool last Friday.
The school councillors discussed suggestions for the contents of the school time capsule, activities for playtimes, and the new school colours and logo.
The executive member for children and young people, councillor Mary Barnett, said: “This is a great opportunity for the members of the school councils to get to know each other and discuss any issues they feel are important.
“As a former teacher, I appreciate the skills good school councils can develop among their members. They allow the views of all pupils to be aired, issues can be tackled and improvements made on issues they feel strongly about.
“For instance, pupils may feel strongly about pupil behaviour, about things that would help them learn better, or about how to improve the school environment.
“I hope the pupils thoroughly enjoy their visit to the council chamber and the experience also gives them an insight into how the council works and how its decisions affect everyone in Torfaen.”
Construction work on Nant Celyn, which is the first new primary school to be built by Torfaen since its formation in 1996, is progressing well. Once open, it will accommodate 420 pupils.
