New service looks at Gwynedd’s past

Gwynedd Council’s Archives Service can offer free on-line access to the 1911 census at both the Caernarfon and Dolgellau Record Offices.

The 1911 census was taken on 2 April, 1911 and notes the name, age, place of birth, marital status and occupation of 36 million householders throughout the country.

This new service for Gwynedd is available thanks to funding from CyMAL: Museums, Archives and Libraries Wales – a division of the Welsh Assembly Government. Other Welsh Record Offices will also be able to offer this free service.

Councillor Roy Owen, who leads on matters involving archives, museums and the arts on Gwynedd Council, said: “These census figures provide us with an unique snapshot of the lives of our ancestors.

“This new free service which is available at Caernarfon and Dolgellau is a key resource for those tracing their family history as well as those interested in social history.”
