Market Street in Abergavenny is now a one way, ‘restricted zone’ along the full length of the street, with parking only allowed for goods vehicles in designated bays.
Colin Phillips, Regeneration Officer at Monmouthshire County Council explained:
“The changes in Market Street are intended to compliment the improvements in the Brewery Yard, and establish improved pedestrian links between the town centre and the future redevelopment of the cattle market site.
“The introduction of a restricted zone, together with revised surfacing, kerblines and ‘shared space’ are intended to reduce traffic speeds and improve accessibility through the widening of footways along sections of the street.
“The one way introduction also means that, in practice, no traffic will be able to enter Market Street from Lion Street. Market Street can now only be accessed from Cross Street.
“There is no longer short or long term parking along Market Street except for goods vehicles in designated bays.
“We understand that this may be inconvenient for some, but once the wider scheme is finished, there will be 95 parking spaces (including seven disabled bays) available again in the Brewery Yard, so we hope people can see that it will be worth it in the end.”
