New Welsh medium primary plans

Plans for a new Welsh medium primary school are expected to take a step forward this week.

Consultation on the plans for a new Welsh medium school, initially on the site of the former Cwm Primary School, is now complete and a report outlining feedback from the consultation process recommends that Swansea Council’s Cabinet Members approve the plans and go to Statutory Notice.

The plan is part of Swansea Council’s Quality in Education (QEd) 2020 programme and the proposed school would help to meet the urgent need for Welsh medium places by September 2012.

The proposal will go to Cabinet on June 2 and has come about because existing Welsh medium schools cannot meet the expected demand in the coming years.

Cllr Mike Day, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “The demand for Welsh medium primary places is continuing to rise and we want to make provision to meet the demand from parents.

“We are continuing to develop long-term plans to meet the forecasted increase in demand for Welsh Medium Education and we’ve brought this proposal forward now to begin to address that demand.

“Cwm’s former junior block in Bonymaen is the most appropriate site for this new school.

“This will help us meet the demand for places and also means children not having to travel out of their community to get to the nearest Welsh medium primary school.”

If Cabinet gives the plan the green light a Statutory Notice will be published and any formal written objections would need to be submitted within two months of publication. If there are any objections then the decision will be referred to a Minister at the Welsh Assembly Government to determine the outcome of the proposal.
