Do your New Year resolutions involve finally getting down to writing that book? Or are you after some guidance on writing technique or style, or advice on marketing your work? Aberystwyth University’s programme of creative writing courses for 2012 may have the answer.
Beginning this January, these lifelong learning courses include Developing a Voice in Writing, designed to support and nurture the emerging writer; Writing in Genre, an opportunity to experiment with genres ranging from horror to comedy, detective to romance; and Writing for the Ear which covers writing for the increasingly popular forms of storytelling and dramatic narrative – or even advertising voiceovers. Also starting again this January, are the well-loved favourites Writing Short Stories, Writing for Children and Writing Poetry.
The part-time courses, held in halls and campus buildings, libraries and schools across mid Wales, cost £60 or less (some people can attend for free), and are open to anyone over the age of sixteen.
If you are looking for a higher education qualification, you could also sign up for Aberystwyth University’s Certificate in Higher Education, Creative Writing at no extra charge. This qualification is designed to allow you to study flexibly, course-by-course, collecting points as you go.
Look out too for new courses later in the year, such as Writing for Nature, to be held during over the summer months, and Becoming a Professional Writer, to include masterclasses by publishers, agents and professional writers.
Aberystwyth University also plans to run a new programme of lifelong learning literature courses covering topics such as twentieth century literature, the Gothic novel, Romantic poetry, controversial literature and feminist writing. Designed to complement the writing programme, the literature courses would also work well as stand-alone modules.
