Come and celebrate a decade of a natural haven in the industrial heartland of Newport on Sunday (18th July) – a mere stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
A complimentary open top bus service will leave Newport bus station stand 29 at 10.45am and 1.45pm for the reserve, with buses returning from the Open Day at 2pm and 4pm.
Stalls and displays by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), RSPB, Gwent Ornithological Society, Newport City Council, Swan Rescue, Gwent Amphibian & Reptile Group, Hedgehog Helpline and Goldcliff Bird Ringing Group will be on show to celebrate the day.
With up to 90,000 visitors a year enjoying the reserve’s wildlife – why not come along and see for yourself what it’s all about?
Reserve Manager, Kevin Dupé said: “The reserve boasts nationally important numbers of a variety of birds such as bearded tit and Cetti’s warbler and is the only breeding site in Wales for avocets. Otters, water shrews, brown hares, polecats and a variety of insects, have also made their home here; visitors should keep their eyes peeled as they enjoy a walk along the boardwalks and paths.”
A photographic exhibition will also be on show in a marquee, capturing the development of the Reserve from construction to the present day. This will then be on display in the RSPB Visitor Centre until the end of October.
Kevin added: “The development of the site over the last ten years has seen it become one of the most important sites for wildlife in Wales.”
The Newport Wetlands open day event will take place between 11am – 4pm. For more information about the day contact: CCW Reserve Team on 01633 275813 or the RSPB Newport Wetlands visitor centre directly on 01633 636363.
