A project that aims to increase quality services for people with sight loss across North Wales will be praised by the Communities Minister Jeff Cuthbert at a special event today (Thurs 20th March).
The North Wales Vision Alliance, which has received funding from the Welsh Government, brings together a number of organisations to recruit expert volunteers who themselves are blind or partially sighted.
These volunteers are trained and supported with the aim of encouraging other people with sight loss in North Wales to become active citizens in their communities to represent the interests of people who have lost their sight. This includes getting involved in issues such as local consultations.
Those involved in the partnership include the RNIB Cymru, Vision Support, North Wales Society for the Blind and Cardiff Institute for the Blind. The project, which also ran in South Wales, has received £67,700 of Welsh Government funding over the last four years.
Communities & Tackling Poverty Minister Jeff Cuthbert said:
“I am delighted the Welsh Government has been able to support this unique project. It has the clear aim of helping people to become volunteers so they can represent the interests of people who have lost their sight.
“I want to recognise the important work of those who have taken on this role. Getting involved in your local community, representing people in events that can lead to important decisions that could have an impact on where they live. They are role models to all of us, not just those who are blind or partially sighted.”
