North West Wales college becomes first to help educate nuclear leaders of the future

Coleg Menai’s training and business consultancy arm, Linc Menai, has announced this week that they will offer the first ever course in Wales in the nuclear industry to deliver the nuclear leaders of the future.

Setting an ambitious aim to up-skill local workers in the industry at the brand new state of the art Canolfan Ynni, located on Anglesey, Linc Menai are calling for all local workers with an interests to get in touch and help ensure that the area continues to be renowned for highly skilled workers in the nuclear industry.

Commenting on the announcement, Lesley Thomas, Managing Director of Linc Menai said: “Nuclear Energy is now a fundamental part of the energy mix. Through successful training Anglesey and Gwynedd workers can take advantages of the upcoming opportunities in the area and ensure we are best placed to maximise on the recent nuclear energy announcements for Anglesey and Gwynedd.”

Aimed at assisting local workers, this brand new course will help ensure that workers across Anglesey and Gwynedd are well prepared for the opportunities shortly coming to fruition thanks to the Anglesey’s Energy Island Initiative. The new Award for Nuclear Industry Awareness (ANIA) programme will focus on providing a foundation level understanding of the nuclear industry and will be provided for local workers in the new state of the art Energy Centre at Coleg Menai on Anglesey.

Commenting on the course local employer Mon Maintenance Services Ltd said: “As a new company looking to further our reach into the Nuclear industry the ANIA course is key to our companies training development. We have 2 employees currently attending the ANIA course with the intention of training all our employees by the end of 2012. The feedback from our employees is that they are thoroughly enjoying the course and it is giving an excellent insight into the nuclear industry.”

Linc Menai has worked closely with COGENT, the sector skills council for the nuclear industry, and NSAN, the National Skills Academy Nuclear, to provide qualifications that meet the demands of the power generation and decommissioning sector.

By working closely with nuclear employers Magnox and Horizon Nuclear Power, Linc Menai has targeted the provision of nuclear related qualifications to meet the future skills needs of the sector.

All apprentices on the ANIA course are all employed by Coleg Menai’s employment and training apprenticeship company Cwmni Prentis Menai Cyf.
