In September Cardiff Council asked homeless people to capture their lives on film and win the opportunity to be a part of the ‘Notes from a City’ exhibition.
Hostel staff and key workers across Cardiff distributed cameras and gave participants 24 hours to take photos on the theme of change.
The competition had 40 entries amounting to 1,080 pictures and on September 30, 33 images were selected to be apart of the exhibition by judges, Hannah Firth, Head of Visual Arts, Chapter Arts, Lisa Edgar, Head of Education, Ffotogallery and Mike Friel, Operational Manager, Cardiff Council.
Three images were also selected and awarded the title of top images of the competion. They were taken by Rebecca Giles (1st), John Arthur (2nd) and Martin Brettle (3rd). Two images which were highly commended were taken by Roy Pearson and Julian Wall.
The chosen photos will now be previewed at the Frontline Workers Forum which will take place on 16th October 2009 at City Hall. The full exhibition will take place in the Old Library Workshop Gallery from December 4th through to December 21st 2009.
Executive Member for Communities, Housing and Social Justice, Cllr Judith Woodman, said: “The Notes of the City exhibition has given homeless people a platform to raise awareness about the issues they face and I am sure they will inspire people to help those who are homeless in the city.”
