Nov 5th safety message for Swansea residents

South Wales Police in Swansea are appealing to those attending the annual fireworks display at St Helen’s this Friday to park safely, legally and sociably for the event which takes place on Friday November 5th, the gates for the event opening at 5.30pm, with the display commencing at 7.30pm.

Last year there were a number of complaints from local residents that vehicles were obstructing footpaths in the vicinity; some streets were effectively blocked, with some motorists even trying to park on the dual carriageway on Oystermouth Road.

Free parking will be provided at the Recreation Ground, Lacrosse Field, Guildhall Circle and Brangwyn Hall Car Park, with overflow parking at the West Car Park, Civic Centre and the University.

Officers are advising those who are attending the event to leave in plenty of time as in the past there has been significant congestion problems.

Police will be placing road closures around the Pantycelyn Road area of Townhill to prevent the area being overrun by vehicles used by members of the public who wish to view the event from Townhill.

Inspector Bill John of Swansea Central Police Station said, “The road closures in the Townhill area at Pantycelyn have been placed on this date for a number of years as a result of road safety concerns, as the area is residential and not suitable for a large influx of vehicles”

” Local authority wardens and Police staff will be patrolling the Uplands and Brynmill areas and will be dealing with parking violations and obstruction.”

He added “However, our aim is to make this a safe and enjoyable evening for those attending St Helen’s and to minimise disruption for the residents of Brynmill and Townhill
