NPT Council organises business event

An event to encourage local businesses to tender for contracts on Harbour Way in Port Talbot has been hailed a huge success.

More than 50 local businesses attended a ‘Meet the Buyer’ event recently, hosted by Costain who has been awarded the £59 million contract, one of Wales’ largest transport construction projects.

The event, organised by Neath Port Talbot Council’s enterprise and employment team, gave local businesses the chance to meet the management team at Costain to discuss local supply opportunities for the last phase of the Peripheral Distributor Road.

It also made companies aware of the minimum requirements needed, for such matters as health and safety and document completion, to become involved in the Harbour Way project.

Interest was expressed from a wide cross section of suppliers including drainage, scaffolding, street lighting and landscaping as well as fabrication, signage and road markings.

Feedback from the networking event was extremely positive.

Mike Tandy, Managing Director of RE Plant Hire Ltd, said, “This is the type of event businesses are interested in attending as it informs us what’s happening and what opportunities there are.

“The event was extremely informative and I welcome Costain’s positive approach to sourcing locally.”

Ellie Taylor, Operations Manager at Insight health Screening Ltd, added, “I feel reassured that Costain is committed to using local suppliers which, in turn, provides a much needed boost to the local economy.”

John Skentelbery, Project Manager for Costain said, ‘It was very  encouraging to see so many local business represented at this event  and we look forward to working with some of them in the future.  Costain is committed to sourcing as much of its’ workforce and  materials locally as possible.’

Council Leader, Ali Thomas, said, “The delivery of this project is of strategic importance to the future regeneration of this area of Port Talbot and we are pleased to see such a high turnout of local businesses at the event.

“Our strategy of not just raising awareness of potential contract opportunities but providing businesses with the necessary support as well to help them win work is proving very successful.”
